Trip to Java (Part 2: Anak Krakatau)

Anak Krakatau through the Quickbird eye (credit to GoogleEarth)

Location of Anak Krakatau (credit to AAPG, Universitas Diponegoro Chapter)

Boat to Anak Krakatau. If i may recall, it took about one hour from Pelabuhan Tanjung Priuk.

From far away.... the still active volcano.

The volcano is part of the Lampung Nature Reserve Park.

The dark sand of volcanic ash will greet you upon arrival on the island.

Good example of plant succession. Only tough pioneer species can survive the soil's extreme condition. Later on it will provide better environmental conditions for other species such as at the lower section of the island.

Superb photo opportunities. Not everyday you can come to an active volcano.

Monitoring volcanic activities of Anak Krakatau. Energy source is derived from our one and only sun.

Bakorsurtanal means Badan Koordinasi dan Survei Nasional similar to Jabatan Ukur dan Pemetaan Malaysia (JUPEM).  Survey benchmark is used to monitor the vertical and horizontal movements of the volcano for early warning system using mm accuracy GPS.

Weathering breaks the mafic volcanic rock into small pieces. Imagine this rock suddenly rolls down. Again, the writer wish to remain anonymous and discreet.

Scoria is formed as gasses escaped from the basaltic lava as its cool. The staff card is shown as a relative scale for the rocks.

Moon-like landscape of Anak Krakatau.
